掛毯以日光東照宮入口,大谷川上的朱紅神橋為題。針法精緻細膩,描繪高嶺疊翠,長川激湍,一道紅橋橫跨溪流,橋身挺拔而優雅。繡工纖巧,線絲勾勒煙嵐,針法宛然筆墨,意境幽遠,頗具山水勝境之趣。整體幾乎以長短針法完成,透過各種色彩繡線與材質,呈現不同質感變化,如層疊山巒、杉樹樹皮、奔騰水流等。為增強立體效果,於刺繡下層墊入棉絮,使橋身與景物更具浮凸感。尤為特別者,橋頂端以金屬線覆蓋固定,與絲線光澤相互映照,增添華麗美感。
此座神橋位於日本栃木縣日光市,隸屬二荒山神社,為日本重要文化財,亦列入世界遺產「日光的神社與寺院」。不僅是日光神社與寺院入口,也被認為是日光的前門與象徵,更有栃木縣最美橋梁之譽。從本作之木結構橋墩判斷,應是以1902年洪水前之景色為構圖,洪災後修復的橋梁已改為石板材質。
日本刺繡始自奈良時代(710-794年),隨著染色技術不斷改善,藝師以針代筆,透過絲線展現光澤和立體感,呈現傳統繪畫般效果,其細膩程度令人驚嘆。明治時代,以畫家所繪草圖為基礎的刺繡畫,受到海內外讚譽,被稱為「明治絢爛的刺繡繪畫」,成為提升日本國際地位的重要推力。此類作品不僅於世界萬國博覽會展出,亦受西方皇室訂製,並作為日本贈予海外王室的外交禮品。由於多以海外市場為主要銷售對象,留存於日本的作品極少,現存實例尤為珍貴,使後人得以窺見明治、大正時期獨樹一幟之工藝高度。
